About James Groleau

Statement

  • I have a special fondness for mezzotint, an engraving technique of soft tones and dramatic contrasts. Although I consider myself a self-taught artist, I attribute much of my ability in this medium to Carol Wax and her book The Mezzotint, which provided answers to any and every question I had. In the spirit of exploration I took leave of the printmaking world after fifteen years to pursue one-of-a-kind works around 2010. I am developing a technique of working with collage that involves painting crumpled papers with color inks and tearing them into small pieces creating images as I glue these pieces of paper onto canvas. In both mezzotint and collage I have enjoyed a range of expression, from dark images of war to the absurdity of a man courting a crow, to the soothing calm of coastal scenes. I endeavor to continue explorations in my work and to sharing them with you.
